Study Skills
Teamwork
Traditional courses have tended to promote individual study and research rather than teamwork. However, the ability to 'Work with Others' is one of the key skills looked for by employers and, increasingly, by institutions of higher education.
How can teamwork be more successful?
- A common purpose
- Clear objectives
- A good mix of people - not everyone can be a leader
- Everyone has a meaningful task to do
- Everyone feels they are contributing to the end product
- Everyone's ideas and original thoughts are considered seriously
- The team is limited in number so that everyone is involved
Possible examples of teamwork
- Joint research using the library or Internet
- Group assignments on a specific topic
- Joint presentations to peers
- Learning support groups
- Activities such as Young Enterprise
- Interactive CDs and simulations such as 'Beat the Boss'
Task
You have to produce groups of 4 people from your set/s to work on an investigative assignment which will involve a 5 minute presentation. Taking each person in turn, consider their personalities, strength of character and any weaknesses they may have. Note down your teams which offer, in your opinion, the best mix of people to achieve your aim. Compare your list with your neighbour, discuss any differences you may have and produce a joint 'best list'.
