Teacher's Guide - Using the site for AVCE Business

The Virtual Bank of Biz/ed business site looks at the ways in which banks and perhaps central banks may impact on the work of businesses. In the Virtual Bank we aim to help with the sort of support that commercial banks may give. This means that we look at issues like business planning, types of legal business structure, investment and also external influences on a business.

This means that the site is most likely to be useful for students as they cover Unit 2 (The Competitive Business Environment) and Unit 6 (Business Planning).

For Unit 2, students will need to look at the areas of types of economic policy, economic indicators (which covers the main economic indicators of unemployment, inflation, growth and the balance of payments) and the role of the Bank of England (which covers the management of the economy through interest rates and the impact of interest changes on business).

For Unit 6, they will need to look mainly at the planning section. The planning section covers marketing planning (which covers market research, marketing planning and the marketing mix) and financial planning (this covers break-even, projected financial accounts and also cash flow forecasting). There is also a planning case study that students may like to have a go at to practice these skills.

Students may also find the material in the finance section of value for some of Unit 5, as this covers sources of business finance. There is also something on types of business in the planning section.

In addition, for centres and students opting for a Financial Services unit, the site will be relevant for the following Awarding Bodies' Units:

  • OCR Unit 12
  • AQA Unit 19
  • Edexcel Unit 14
