Europe - The euro
Introduction
The euro is the single European currency. Eleven European countries joined the euro, which officially began on January 1st 1999 though the notes and coins were introduced with effect from January 1st 2002. On 1 January 2001, the euro also replaced the national currency of Greece. These 12 countries are known collectively as the euro area. Three of the European Union (EU) Member States have not yet adopted the euro: Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
However, the UK may join in the future. That decision is a political one and therefore in the hands of the government and the people! In this section we look at various issues to do with the euro.
