Europe

In this section we look wider into Europe and how money and the financial system works at a European level. Euro notes and coins were introduced into the bulk of Europe on January 1st 2002 and this marked the culmination of the changeover from the legacy currencies (the national currencies like the French Franc and Deutschmark) to the euro. Even though the UK did not join then, it nevertheless affected us considerably and we continue to debate whether to join. The City is one of the premier financial centres in the world, and certainly in Europe. This means that a lot of the trading and financial business that goes on happens in London. The City therefore had to be well prepared to trade in euros.

In this section we look in more detail at these issues. Follow the links below to access the resources available:

  • European Central Bank - in this section we look at a variety of questions. What is the ECB and where is it? Who runs it? What does it do? How is the Bank of England involved?
  • The euro - this section looks at the introduction of the euro and considers how it works in practice
