Economics bank

Introduction

Welcome to the Economics half of the Virtual Bank of Biz/ed. This part of the site has a wealth of resources relating to money, monetary policy, markets and Europe. It is split into four main sections and each section has explanations, relevant theory, worksheets and some areas for further work. Follow the links below to browse each section:

  • Monetary policy - this section looks at the causes, costs and cures for inflation and also at the work of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of England in maintaining price stability in the UK.
  • Markets - this section looks at how a central bank could intervene in both the money market and the foreign exchange markets if necessary and also looks at the operation of these markets.
  • Money - in this section we look at money - not literally, but theoretically. What makes a good form of money? What functions and attributes does money need to have? How does the UK financial system work?
  • Europe - in this section we look wider at the financial system for the whole of Europe and the operation of the euro. In particular we look at the work of the European Central Bank (ECB) and how they maintain price stability in the eurozone.

Don't forget that the site also has a full glossary and you can search In The News at any time for news about money, interest rates, banks, the Bank of England or perhaps the euro.

There is also a teacher's guide giving some advice on how to get the best from the site.
