Monetary Policy - Inflation

Introduction

In this section we look at inflation in more detail. What causes inflation? Who suffers from inflation? What can we do to get rid of inflation? All of these are vital questions for the economy. Choose below which aspect of inflation you would like to know more detail about.

  • Causes - in this section we look in more detail at the causes of inflation. Is it caused by excessive wage growth, by the level of demand growing too fast or by costs pushing up prices?
  • Costs - why does inflation matter? A lot of effort is put into controlling inflation, so it's important to know who it affects and how.
  • Cures - once we understand the problem, we can start to think of ways to fix it. In this section we look at the various different ways economists have suggested for controlling inflation - some of them more practical than others!

Each of the sections has an explanation of the topic, some detail about the relevant economic theories and worksheets. There are also some suggestions for further work on the topic.
