Economics bankTeacher's Guide - Using the site for teaching A2 EconomicsThe Virtual Bank of Biz/ed economics site focuses very heavily on inflation and monetary policy and so is most likely to be of value in the national economy modules (AQA module 6, Edexcel module 6 and OCR module 7 (2887)). For the A2 units, the students should be aware of the bulk of the contents of the site. The best starting point may be to look at (or revise) the work of the MPC and from there progress to look more generally at inflation and then perhaps finish with an overview of monetary policy by looking at the pages on the whys and wherefores of monetary policy and the history of monetary policy. There are two main types of worksheet on the site - those that can be printed out and completed on paper, and interactive quizzes that can be completed on screen. It may often be worth the students initially having a go at the interactive quizzes as these focus more on the lower order skills of knowledge and understanding. They can then move onto the printable worksheets which still have questions on the lower-order information skills, but also then encourage students to gather data and apply and evaluate their knowledge. However, the site also has information on Europe and the euro that will be a help for European modules if they are doing those. Even if not covering Europe for an in depth module, it will be important for students to look at the euro section to ensure they understand the implications of the possible adoption of the euro. Students may also find the markets section useful when looking at market intervention. This markets area is split into two sub-sections - market intervention to maintain interest rates at the rate set by the MPC, and also a section on intervention in foreign exchange markets. This could make an excellent case study for students when they are covering the markets and market failure modules. |
