Destination 2 Chingola It is thought that over 30 million people on the African continent have full blown AIDS. In Zambia perhaps 19% of the population suffer from infection from HIV. You will visit the town of Chilongi on the Copperbelt and discover the impact of AIDs on the economy of the country and the likely impact on future development. A whole generation of children are growing up as orphans, having lost their parents to the disease. A number of agencies are attempting to break the cycles of poverty by various means. Low incomes and low savings mean that there are very limited funds for investment. In the Ngoma shanty town you find one increasingly popular solution to this problem. Microfinance is a system of banking on a small scale. PULSE, a system of microcredit is being provided by CARE International enabling people to borrow small but sufficient amounts of money to start a business and provide an income.
