Curriculum areas where the child poverty model can add value are numerous, the following list highlights a few.

Curriculum Areas

Market Failure and Government Intervention

If you applied the existence of child poverty as an income inequality or an example of a distribution failure then the model would add a new perspective to:

  • why child poverty is an example of market failure
  • how governments can tackle the problem and
  • what are the consequences of that form of intervention.

The model identifies the consequences of policy on different income groups.

Government Macro Objectives

The issue of child poverty can be included as a target within government macro economic policy. The model is very useful for reinforcing the macroeconomic fiscal policy instruments and the potential conflicts (trade-offs) that result from the use of alternative policies.

The UK Economy

The model offers great potential for supporting issues relating to living standards and the concept of the distribution of income.

Modelling an economy

The focus of the model allows the teacher to incorporate it into a classroom discussion on economic models. In particular, the principles, assumptions, predictions and limitations can be addressed.
